An Effort to Create Shalom for the City Through Education

Abstract

Migration is an unavoidable phenomenon and urbanization is one of its manifestations in Indonesia today. As a result, the gathering of people in cities gives either negative or positive impacts and burden the ecology in the area. Thus, according to the results UMC’s research in 2022, this problem becomes a calling for the tsaddiqim or righteous people to become instrument of transformation in the public space. It is important to see this process as an effort to find sustainable solutions, hence, education is one of the keys to making it happen. I claim that the philosophy of critical education coupled with the missionary vision of the Lausanne movement can be one of the options chosen in making education, especially K-12, an important piece in realizing this. The final result of this paper is three visions which become the study of interdisciplinary studies of critical and theological educational philosophy, namely: a vision of sustainability, a holistic vision, and also a non-elitist vision. The vision of sustainability means that this inter-disciplinary vision invites all participants to see a systematic vision to solve the problems above. Then, the holistic vision is also an invitation to look at the city's complex problems in an integrative way. Lastly, the non-elitist vision is an invitation that the above problems cannot be solved only by elitism. This movement needs to target the grassroots.
