Abstract

In Indonesia, 80.95 percent of the population still lacks secure access to clean water. The goal of providing access to clean water to all Indonesians by 2030 is quite far off. The religious community must participate in spreading awareness of this issue as Indonesian citizens. According to the author's research, there isn't much multidisciplinary theological study that addresses Indonesia's lack of access to clean water. The author believes that in order for Christians to advance access to water in Indonesia, there needs to be a theological development. The author draws on Larry Rasmussen's earth-respecting ethics and Barbara Rossing's theology of water to bolster this claim. Rossing observed that water is a healer, a gift, a party that cries out for justice, and a party that is subjugated by imperialism. It is also a party that gives life. In Rasmussen's ethics, asceticism is contrasted with consumerism, the sacred earth imagination with a market-based worldview, mysticism is contrasted with alienation, prophetic-liberative acts are contrasted with oppression, and wisdom is contrasted with ignorance. The author develops a theology of water access based on these two ideas, including water respiritualization and practice reconfiguration. The asceticism of healing water, holy water as a free gift, and mysticism with life-giving water are all examples of the spiritualization of water. Prophetic justice for water and counter-imperial wisdom in water usage are two aspects of the reconfiguration of practices toward water. This can be shown in selfcontrol, giving free and clean water, emphasizing water quality, considering who benefits and battling for universal and unrestricted access to water, also be wise in confronting those and systems that hinder accessto water.
