Factors that Affect the Effectiveness of High School Student Discipleship in Three Distinct Urban Contexts

Abstract

This research explores the discipleship process of high school students in three different cities (Jakarta, Pekanbaru, Solo) with a phenomenological qualitative approach. Based on interviews with 12 participants who had attended small groups during their school years, the study found that discipleship has a significant impact on students' conversion and holistic growth. The main factors that influence the effectiveness of discipleship include mentoring relationships, friendship and family relationships, formation materials, learning dynamics, personal spiritual disciplines, and service experiences. In addition, support from family, school, and community also strengthens the discipleship process. The results confirm that the discipleship process needs to be adapted to the stages of adolescent development and influenced by the local socio-cultural context. The practical implications of this study include the need for community policies and strategies that support the holistic growth of students in adolescence, so that they can grow into leaders with integrity and serve in the midst of family, church and society.
