Courage and Calling
Main Article Content
Abstract
Deep within the depths of the human heart, throughout history, people have continually wrestled with the meaning of their lives. The 300-page book Courage and Calling guides its readers to understand the idea of “calling” from a Christian faith perspective. The author, Gordon T. Smith, is the president of Ambrose University and Ambrose Seminary in Calgary, Alberta. He teaches systematic theology and spirituality. Other books he has written include Called to Be Saints, Spiritual Direction, and Consider Your Calling.
The uniqueness of this book compared to others of its kind lies in Smith’s explanation of the meaning of calling, which he presents in three distinct parts. Smith believes that God calls people in three ways: (1) the call to become a follower of Christ, (2) a specific call directly related to each individual’s engagement in the world, and (3) the responsibilities that must be faced day by day.
